With so much choice, there's no surprise that a large majority of students get stuck choosing the job they could be successful with. Flicking through a list of odd-sounding and meaningless job titles is next to useless. The vast majority of us have no idea what our good friends do at work - let alone understand the subtleties of a particular IT career. Ultimately, an informed conclusion really only appears from a meticulous investigation across many different criteria:

- Our personalities play a major part - what things get your juices flowing, and what are the areas that you really dislike.

- Are you looking to pull off a specific aim - for instance, becoming self-employed sometime soon?

- How important is salary to you - is an increase your main motivator, or do you place job satisfaction a lot higher on your priority-list?

- Getting to grips with what the normal job types and sectors are - and what makes them different.

- How much time you will commit the training program.

In actuality, it's obvious that the only real way to seek advice on these issues tends to be through a good talk with an advisor or professional that has years of experience in Information Technology (and specifically the commercial needs and requirements.)

Quite often, students have issues with one area of their training which doesn't even occur to them: The method used to 'segment' the courseware before being delivered to your home. The majority of training companies will set up some sort of program spread over 1-3 years, and drop-ship the materials to you piecemeal as you get to the end of each exam. Sounds reasonable? Well consider these facts: What would their reaction be if you find it difficult to do each element at the proposed pace? Often the prescribed exam order won't be as easy as some other order of studying might.

The ideal circumstances are to get all the training materials couriered to your address right at the beginning; the entire thing! Then, nothing can hinder the reaching of your goals.

A valuable training course package should also include wholly authorised exam simulation and preparation packages. Don't go for training programs relying on unauthorised exam preparation questions. The type of questions asked can be quite different - and this leads to huge confusion in the actual examination. Always request some practice exams that will allow you to verify your knowledge along the way. Practice or 'mock' exams log the information in your brain - so the real thing isn't quite as scary.

Ignore a salesperson that pushes one particular program without performing a 'fact-find' to gain understanding of your current abilities and also your experience level. Ensure that they have a large product range from which they could give you a program that suits you.. It's worth remembering, if you've had any relevant previous certification, then you will often be able to start at a different point than someone who is new to the field. If you're a student starting IT studies and exams for the first time, it can be useful to start out slowly, starting with user-skills and software training first. This can be built into most types of training.
